Up to now I have resisted the temptation to buy a Long Case clock, but I have to say that I thought this one so attractive that I fell for it. It stands including the finials at 7ft. The case is Oak and the grain is very attractive, which does not really show in the photograph. It is quite easy to date the dial at 1780 to 1830. This unfortunately does not mean that the clock movement and case are the same age, as changing dials was not uncommon. The date circle behind the dial has the name Cornes , manufactured in Birmingham. I am unable to find any reference to him , but Birmingham was famous for dial making. The movement is quite normal for the era ,eight day movement and rack striking on a gong. It is reasonably priced, but shipping could be extra, depending on how far away. The movement has been completely overhauled and is going very well. I have tried to do as little as possible to the dial, but the roman figures were very splodgy so I have tidied those up. The names Holmes and Penn, because they were almost obliterated , I have put simple transfers on which can be removed quite easily , if at a later date , the dial is professionaly restored. It seems likely that the maker was Conway Holmes who was a clockmaker in High Wycombe between 1823 and 1830. The village of Penn is very near or could have been a part of High Wycombe at that time. The case needed only slight attention. I have mended the lock and found a key to fit. All in all a very handsome clock.. |
